Since entering private practice in 1985, Daniel W. Schermer has built a reputation for successfully representing clients in complex criminal and civil tax matters, tax litigation, and other complex litigation in the federal and state district courts and the U.S. and state Tax Courts.

We represent individuals and businesses that are under criminal investigation or civil audit by the IRS or Minnesota Department of Revenue. We also represent individuals and businesses that are involved in a broad array of litigation matters.

Our tax crimes practice focuses almost exclusively on IRS and Minnesota Department of Revenue tax fraud investigations and prosecutions as well as subsequent or concurrent criminal and civil matters that arise as a result of these investigations. Related criminal charges can include money laundering, fraud and currency violations.

Our civil tax practice focuses on individuals and businesses that are being audited or have some other dispute with the IRS or the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

Our white collar crimes practice focuses on investigations and prosecutions involving economic crimes, such as mail and securities fraud, housing fraud, money laundering, and currency violations.

Criminal Tax Litigation and White Collar Crimes

Complex Civil Litigation

We maintain an active and successful civil litigation practice concentrating on commercial litigation and disputes involving accounting issues. Mr. Schermer represents both businesses and individuals and both plaintiffs and defendants.

Mr. Schermer has also been lead or co-counsel on a number of significant employment law cases, including Maki v. Allete, which protected the pensions of women who had been terminated by their employer due to marriage or pregnancy, and Zmora v. St. Cloud State University, a religious discrimination case where the plaintiffs recovered more than $1,100,000 and the university undertook major reforms to eliminate discrimination. Mr. Schermer frequently partners with his wife, a prominent employment lawyer, on employment cases.
